In Bulgaria, cultural heritage preservation policies often amount to a collection of fragmented efforts, lacking a coherent vision. In many cases, buildings and structures deemed economically or politically “inconvenient” are simply abandoned. Carriers of memory and identity, they are often left to decay, adapted without context, or destroyed in the name of private interests.

Filip Boyadjiev’s new work “JUICY STATION” critically intervenes in this process, adopting the form of a glowing sign that draws on the familiar visual language of commercial establishments. Through the periodic flickering and disappearance of the letter “T” from the Cyrillic sign, the meaning of the words is transformed, from Freight Station to Juicy Station, directing attention to the appetite of the “big players” for such abandoned buildings, as well as to notions of erasure, oblivion, and erosion, both literal and symbolic.

In this way, a specific urban site, the Central Railway Freight Station becomes a starting point for a broader reflection on the fate of architecture in modern day society.

The work raises questions about institutional and public responsibility toward heritage, the invisible mechanisms of economic pressure, and possible forms of contemporary coexistence between the old and the new.
